Billy Elliot the Musical is the inspirational story of one boy’s fantasy to fully grasp his dream, against the stacked odds. In secret, Billy pursues his passion for dance, avoiding the public eye to avoid disapproval of his struggling family. The show’s celebrated backdrop is set in the North East of England during the historic nineteen eighty-four miners’ strike. Billy Elliot the Musical is based on the smash hit film written by Lee Hall.

For Billy Elliot the Musical, writer Lee Hall, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling needed to enlist some monumental help to really set the tone of the show. For this they acquired the musical talents of Sir Elton John as they created the perfect blend of hilarity and inspiration for this infinitely entertaining performance. Elton John eventually coaxed Lee Hall into the studio with him to write the song lyrics, insisting that no one else could do a better job.

As Lee and Elton set out to discover the music that would become Billy Elliot the Musical, they realized that they would need to tap into the rooted traditions of the songs that resonated with the working class culture that Billy Elliot is about. With male-dominated choirs singing various hymns and the kind of folk and rock n’ roll songs that were beloved by the working class of mid-eighties England, coming effortlessly form Elton John’s mind, Lee Hall realized that they were in fact creating a particularly British musical. That is to say, Billy Elliot was fast becoming a real part of British heritage just like Ewan McColl’s work at the Unity Theatre.

With the story written and the music composed, there was only one gigantic hurdle left for the team. They needed to find themselves the perfect Billy Elliot, but not just one solitary Billy Elliot, three of them. After years of meetings, interviews and showcases at every dance school in the country, the team came across a group of young boys who completely surpassed all of Lee’s hopes. "The strangest thing was conjuring up a story which I thought was an extreme and unlikely metaphoric tale only to find time after time that it was true." Lee said of the discovery that his story was in fact the basic timeline to the lives the boys had lived.
