Dirty Dancing tells the story of a native 17 year old named ‘Baby’ and the summer that changed her forever. On vacation to the Catskill Mountains in New York with her older sister and parents she rejects the resort’s planned activities choosing to party in the staff quarters all night. She meets Johnny, a resort dance instructor, at an all night dance party and is mesmerized by the raunchy dance moves and pounding rhythms. Her life is forever changed when gets too involved with both Johnny and his girlfriend and dance partner and must prove to herself, Johnny and her father that she has grown from a native teenage girl into an adult. The Adwych Theatre is a West End theatre and can be found on Aldwych in the city or Westminster. It seats 1,200 people and was originally built as a pair along with the Waldorf Theatre that is now know as the Novello Theatre. It was designed by W.G.R. Sprague and funded by Seymour Hicks. The beautiful theatre is ornately decorated in the Georgian style and draws visitors all over just to get a glimpse inside.
The Alwych theatre opened in 1905 on December 23 and it’s first play was Blue Bell, a revisit of Hick’s classic pantomime Bluebell in Fairyland. In 1906 The Beauty of Bath began its year long run and was followed in 1907 by the Gay Gordons. In 1913 the theatre was used by Serge Diaghilev and Vaslay Nikinsky as a rehearsal space for their play Le Sacre du Printemps and controversially premiered in Paris later that year.
Dirt Dancing is a classic movie that got its start in the United States but is now known and loved the world over. It really speaks to a variety of generations and can really capture the angst of growing up and the relationship between a father and his daughter. It evokes a sense of humour and relatability that is rarely seen in stage shows. It is an amazing performance full of interesting characters and amazing dancing.
