The second most populous municipality in Spain and the capitol of Catalonia, Barcelona is a great place to visit, one of the world's leading cities for its culture, economy, and tourism. Located on the Mediterranean coastline of eastern Spain with its gorgeous beaches, the metropolis has a large international airport, is a major seaport, and is a main destination hub for a high-speed railway system. No matter what brings travellers to stay in one of the luxurious and affordable downtown Barcelona hotels, they should devote at least a little time to see some of the attractions right in the downtown area. Here are samples of the many attractions in the heart of the city:

Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art

Opened in November of 1995, this museum is in the old section of town where several other fine museums and historic buildings are situated. The museum's permanent collection includes art from the mid-1900s. Most of the collections are the art of Catalonia and Spain. Events such as guided tours and video screenings often take place in the museum. Across the square is an old chapel that shows free video art performances.

Casa Batllo'

This amazing building that seems to defy straight lines was first built as a residence in which people lived. Broken tiles fit together in a mosaic for the outer finish. The building was a joint remodel creation of Antoni Gaudi and Josep Maria Jujol. Commonly called the "House of Bones" because of its skeletal appearance, the roof looks like the skin of a giant dragon. Inside, the ceiling, staircase and rooms are stunningly unique.

Goya Theatre

Built in the early 1900s and still in use today, this theatre has been preserved as it originally appeared. Seating just over seven hundred people, the Modernist auditorium has plush velvet seats, period lamps and boxes for privileged seating. Many famous actors from Spain and Catalonia have played on the stage through the years.

La Boqueria

The super-sized Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is a vast market dating from the 1200s A.D. A wonderful place to purchase house wares and handmade souvenirs, most of the market stalls are dedicated to the local and international foods loved in Barcelona. From a fish market to fresh produce, meats and dairy to spices and seasonings, La Boqueria is a great place for visitors to enjoy regional culture.

Palau de la Musica Catalana

The concert hall was completed around the year 1908. The designer Lluis Domenech i Montaner created it in the local Modernista style. The spectacular lighted ceiling and beautiful architecture make it a wonderful place to come and enjoy music. Many types of music play here from jazz to classical to folk.
