For those tourists who love historic sites and landmarks, New York City has plenty to offer. With a long list of sites to visit, some of these include the Empire State Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Stock Exchange, Rockefeller Center, The Statue of Liberty, and the World Trade Center site. There are many other landmarks not to be missed and some of these are described below.
Woolworth Building is one of the oldest skyscrapers of Manhattan and was built in 1913. At that time, it was the considered the tallest building in the world, measuring 60 stories and 792 feet high. It is named for the millionaire Frank W. Woolworth, who financed the building with cash and designed by architect Cass Gilbert.
A.T. Stewart Company Store is known as the first American department store opened by Alexander Turney Stewart. Otherwise known as the Marble Palace, the Palladian-style store was built in 1845-1846, designed by John B. Snook. The store highlights offered women imported European clothing and full-length mirrors.
The triangular Flatiron Building in Manhattan is one of the world’s first skyscrapers. It was built in 1902 and was the tallest building in New York City from 1901 to 1911. The architects of the building were Daniel Burnham and Frederick P. Dinkelberg. It measures 22 stories at 285 feet. Today, the building functions as an office building and is a popular tourist attraction. It can be seen in the opening credits of the David Letterman Show, in the movie Godzilla, and in the Spiderman movies.
Carnegie Hall is a famous music venue located in Manhattan, established in 1891 and is in close proximity to many
hotels in New York. The Italian Renaissance-style building was designed for Andrew Carnegie by the architect William Burnet Tuthill. Performers such as Tchaikovsky, Leopold Godowsky, and Sergei Rachmaninoff were among some of the first to make special appearances. The Rose Museum and the Carnegie Hall Archives are later additions which detail and follow the history of Carnegie Hall.
The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, is the first and oldest steel wire suspension bridge in the United States. It spans the East River and connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. Many events have taken place on the Brooklyn Bridge and some of these include bungee jumping, the 1994 Brooklyn Bridge shooting, the 2003 Plot, the 2006 bunker discovery, and the 100th and 125th anniversary celebrations.
