Brighton, England, is located in Sussex, in the far south-eastern corner of the country, looking out across the English Channel towards France. It is part of the larger city of Brighton & Hove, but this article will deal with the
hotels in Brighton, and the major tourist attractions.
Since Brighton is a coastal city, many of its major lodging places are naturally situated near the beaches, of which they offer majestic views. They include the following:
De Vere Grand (expensive) was made from a Victorian building, and JFK once stayed there. The most rewarding part of a stay at this hotel is probably the AnnabelOlivia Yacht, which visitors can pilot under the supervision of the boat's crew— and can even have the boat temporarily branded with their company logos.
The Granville Hotel (medium range) lies opposite the town's historic West Pier. Each of its twenty-four rooms is decorated in a unique style: Mrs. Fitzherbert's Room (named for one of the Prince Regent's mistresses) has walls and bedding of a glowing red; the Pavilion Room has a canopy bed with lavender curtains; a multi-coloured checkerboard pattern graces the beds in Prinny's Room; and there is even a Japanese Room with decorations from that country!
Neo Hotel is a luxury hotel with attractive balconies. Its rooms, too, are each decorated in a different way: One room is covered with Florence Broadhurst wallpaper, which is Japanese- inspired, and another has similar Japanese- style walls with black, white and gold flowering and a large white vase with a small mouth. Massage treatment is also available.
The Grapevine Seafront is an inexpensive beach front hostel suited for large groups as well as individual tourists. Free Wi-Fi Internet is available, and the lounge is well- decorated and spacey.
And for the town's main attractions:
The Brighton Museum & Art Gallery has, among other things, a Fashion & Style Gallery with costumes dating from the time of King George IV, and a Performance Gallery where plays from all eras are put on using masks, puppets, and the like.
The Booth Museum of Natural History houses a variety of stuffed birds collected by Edward Booth, a naturalist who aspired to collect samples of every bird living in Great Britain. Also a colourful butterfly collection.
The Brighton Toy & Model Museum is one of the best of its kind anywhere. It has a model railway collection and booths featuring many kinds of puppets, including Punch and Judy.
Brighton Fishing Museum has many historic ships and boats on display, and shows films on the fishing industry.
The Royal Pavilion's onion- shaped domes are strikingly similar to those in Russia. And since the 18th century, Brighton has been a health resort.
