Rome, Italy has always been a very tourist friendly city, providing visitors every opportunity to soak up what Rome has to offer. Italy is an amazing country, with rolling hillsides, the beauty of the sea and a rich ancient history. The city of Rome is Italy's shining star. There are many top tourist destinations to see when in Rome, and people visit Rome for varied reasons, but they always come away happy and relaxed from a Roman vacation!

One of the most exciting places to see in Rome is the Vatican City. The Vatican City is actually a country unto itself and separate from Italy. Thousands of tourists come each year to visit the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and home to the Pope. For many Catholics, visiting the Vatican is like a religious pilgrimage. Within Vatican City, there are many other architectural and artistic masterpieces to see as well. Visit the Sistine Chapel, where one of the most recognized paintings in the world exists, done by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the chapel.


Rome has amazing examples of ancient architecture, much of it originating in the years of the Roman Empire. The Parthenon and the Colosseum are two sites that tourist never want to miss. The Coliseum was home to the great Roman games. It held nearly 50,000 people and showcased the warrior like gladiators of Roman mystique, but it is also where public executions took place. These two sites showcase ancient history like no other in the world.

The Piazza Navona, located in Rome next to the Stadium of Domitian, is a public square that contains several sculptured fountains in the middle, and is a favourite place of the locals. There are restaurants, or outdoor cafes, that line the square. Artists are usually found painting at their easels in the square because of its beauty. The food is delicious here so lunch is always recommended at one of the cafes.

There are plenty of museums here featuring the works of famous artists like Caravaggio and Bernini, and there are nearly 400 other notable churches to visit in the city of Rome.
