Just like any other form of transportation, the legs need tune-ups and maintenance to keep them looking and feeling like new. When the legs are plagued by throbbing veins, they should be thoroughly examined for varicose veins. Although the colour can vary greatly, varicose veins are usually easy to identify because of their stringy appearance. In fact, they are more commonly referred to as spider veins. Varicose, or spider, veins not only cause pain in the legs, but severe swelling and heavy or tired legs can also be indicators.
Varicose veins develop in response to an issue with the blood's circulation system. Most people know that the heart pumps the blood into the body that will travel through and nourish each limb and organ. Of what many people are unaware is the difficult responsibility humans place on their legs. Legs are not only used for walking, but they are also the pressure source that pushes the deoxygenated blood back around to the heart. Varicose veins develop when the legs are pushing so hard against gravity that leaks sprout in the veins resulting in the collection of dried blood that then cause expansion. In addition to leg pain, other noticeable effects of varicose veins can be severe swelling in the legs as well as overall heaviness and tiredness to the lower limbs.
Men and women who fall into high-risk categories can check for the development of varicose veins often to avoid complications. Because the veins become diseased, the situation will continuously get worse if left untreated. Men and women can have a predisposition to varicose veins because of their gene pool as one indicator of high-risk people is heredity. Other common high-risk individuals are those suffering from obesity as well as multiple pregnancies. Extra or excessive weight gain strains the veins throughout the body; thus, increases the likelihood that spider veins will develop. Additionally, work that requires standing for long periods of time increases the chances of spider veins. Once varicose veins develop, they will only get worse unless treatment is sought. The least invasive procedure to eliminate painful and unsightly varicose veins is a closure procedure.
A closure procedure is far less painful than the more common but out-dating stripping surgery. In the past spider veins has to be pulled out individually and not only was it incredibly painful, but the skin left behind would be scarred. When a closure procedure is performed, patients are able to return to work quickly with little or scarring at all. The procedure is successful because of the catheter that is used to seal off diseased and damaged veins. For the closure procedure the doctor inserts the catheter into the lower leg; thus, also eliminating the need for deep slices into the groin. Shooing spiders from haemoglobin pathways is no longer painful surgery with the closure procedure.
