Visiting Tenerife’s museums will give visitors an overview of the island’s history. Construction on Casa Lercaro in the city of La Laguna began in the 16th century. This museum is the former home of the Lercaro family. The History Museum and Island Archives are located here. The 11 exhibition rooms are full of displays relating to Tenerife from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Casa Ossuna is also in La Laguna. The kitchen in this 17th century home is typical of that time period. The Ossuna family’s furniture is still in the building. The Regional Military Museum in Santa Cruz has weapons from the 15th century.
Tenerife also has museums related to science and nature. The Museum of Science and the Cosmos in La Laguna has a planetarium and interactive exhibits. The Museum of Man and Nature in Santa Cruz has three floors of exhibits. Visitors to this museum will learn about the plants and animals of the Canarian Archipelago.
A variety of exhibits are displayed in other museums on the island. La Baranda Wine Museum is in El Sazual. This museum has a large exhibit on the history of wine. Visitors can sample and purchase native wines here. La Casa De La Miel is a museum with displays about honey. It is next door to the wine museum. The Ceramics Museum in La Orotava has an extensive collection of pottery. The Museum of Ibero-American Craftsmanship is also in La Orotava. Glasswork, ceramics and musical instruments are on display here. The Municipal Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Cruz displays paintings and sculpture from local artists. Santa Cruz is also home to the Centre of Photography where visitors can stroll through two exhibition halls. This museum has a library with over 3,000 books on photography that visitors are welcome to peruse.
